Chemical Plant Tank Repair Chemical Plant Tank Repair

Site Background

The acidic nature and corrosive environment of the raw materials used in the manufacturing process, caused huge damage to the ETP tanks linings, conditioning tanks, drainages, etc. To maintain the smooth working of the plant, one month shutdown was taken to carry out the repair work of the identified locations.

Solution Provided

The conditioning tank module 3 area was coated using RELINFORCETM Surface Shield III HL for better chemical resistance as it provides excellent chemical resistance to wide range of chemicals due high cross linking density as well as superior strengthening properties.

3 months studies on the effect of chemicals of ETP conditioning tank was conducted prior to application at site.

Timeline for Completion of Work

8-10 Days (Including all civil and mechanical work)

Chemical Exposure in the Tank

8-10 Days PTA effluent with PH 6 to 9 having COD 6000

Materials Used

  • RELINFORCETM G CSM mat - 300 GSM.
  • RELINFORCETM Fab S PR (Primer).
  • RELINFORCETM EP Putty.
  • RELINFORCETM EP Mortar.
  • RELINFORCETM Surface Shield III HL.

Application Process

  • 1. Surface preparation of the conditioning tank was done prior to the application of chemical resistance lining. The previously installed lining was removed by grinding the surface.
  • 2. Major surface of the tank was ready after the grinding process was completed.
  • 3. The remaining uneven and undulated surface was first primed using the RELINFORCETM Fab S PR and the undulations were filled using RELINFORCETM EP Putty.
  • 4. Once the putty layer is cured properly, the chemical resistance coating layer was then installed on the surface.
  • 5. The chemical resistance coating was installed to the tank in such a way that the final thickness of the coating must be 2-3 mm. In order to achieve the desired thickness of the coating, 2 layers of the RELINFORCETM G CSM mat 300 GSM were incorporated with the RELINFORCETM Surface Shield III HL saturant.
  • 6. These 2 layers of glass fabric were installed at once with the help of RELINFORCETM Surface Shield III HL saturant.
  • 7. Once the 2 layers were installed and cured properly, 1 more coat of saturant RELINFORCETM Surface Shield III HL was then applied over the applied 2 layer glass fiber mat in order to provide resin rich surface for improved chemical resistance.

Benefits of Using RELINFORCETM System in ETP Tank Repair Project

  • RELINFORCETM provided faster repair than conventional methods and do not require any hot work like welding.
  • The Complete Process of repairing the ETP Tank was completed in 10-12 Days including all Civil and Mechanical work.
  • It provides excellent chemical resistance to wide range of chemicals (Effluent with PH 6 to 9 having COD 6000).
  • Minimal change to structure's weight was observed.
